Leila Hassan,
hydro phōnḗ
hydro phōnḗ is on display in Projektraum Kunstquartier Bethanien Gallery August 25th – 10th of Spetember.

Hassan’s piece, hydro phōn., is a play on words in audio-visual actions. The phrase hydro phōn. come from ancient Greek words hydro (water), and phōn. (speech or sound). This combination of words hints at the relationship of language with water. Within this work, Hassan examines what the sound (of water) is to the listeners. She quotes the phōn., with a speaker that renders the “voice” of water.
A well is created by digging deep into the earth to find drinkable water. This technique dates back to pre-pottery neolithic times nearly 8000 years ago when the first types of wells were constructed near the Mediterranean area.
This work consists of hand-pottered round ceramic vases that the artist has built to capture the essence of water. These vases also have a sonorous body that appears like a fountain within a fountain, only deepe: almost underground. They are audible, visible, and invisible.
Hydro phōn. is a summary of old dreams and old techniques from analog to digital and vice versa. It is a hidden place like the one the artist discovered in the hidden riads in Morocco’s old towns. A jewel of craftsmanship, inside it a tiny voice that speaks to us.
